Fire Safety Law

Fire Regulations in England are changing and all businesses must ensure they comply.

Will you be ready? You must ensure you comply with the new regulations by 1st October 2006.

Will this affect me?  Yes, if you are:

  • responsible for business premises
  • an employer
  • self-employed with a business premises
  • a charity or voluntary organisation
  • a contractor with a degree of control over any premises

The Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations are now in force

As an Employer you should now be aware of The Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997 These Regulations took effect on the 1 December 1997. This legislation was amended by The Fire Precautions (Workplace) (Amendment)  Regulations 1999 which came into force on the 1 December 1999. And also The Management of Health and Safety Regulations  1999

Now every organisation with five or more employees must now undertake an assessment of the fire risks in the same way that you undertake Health and  Safety assessments in order to maintain a safe working enviroment.

These  requirements include:

  • Carrying out a fire risk assessment
  • The provision of firefighting and fire detection equipment
  • The provision of adequate means of escape (MoE)
  • The production of an effective fire action plan
  • The training of all staff - fire safety awareness
  • The training of fire wardens
  • The maintenance and recording of all provisions

Failure to comply with this Act is an offence!
